There's a certain kind of designer who doesn't chase trends, who instead asks more enduring questions: Will someone reach for this in three years? Does it have a story? Sarah Alexis leads with that instinct. Based in Charleston, South Carolina, she builds collections rooted in natural fabrics, special details, and the living beauty of her surroundings. We sat down with her to talk design philosophy, inspiration, and what it really takes to build a brand you believe in.
You've said you want pieces that feel special years later, not just for a season. What does that actually look like in practice when you're designing?
As a designer, I'm not very trend-driven. Instead, I focus on sourcing the right fabrics, especially prioritizing natural fabrics, and then adding in special details. That can look like a hand-painted print, interesting buttons, or a fun fringe. My design philosophy is that each piece should feel classic and wearable, but with one or two aspects that give it personality and make it feel elevated.

Charleston has such a distinct energy. How does where you live and work show up in what you make?

Charleston is such a source of inspiration for Sarah Alexis! The charm of the city and the natural beauty of the area are always inspiring the design and storytelling of our collections in one way or another. As an example, our new Lowcountry watercolor print features cranes, palms, and an oak tree with Spanish moss that were all inspired by our surrounding area.
If you could only pack one Sarah Alexis piece for a weekend trip, what would it be, and where would you be going?
I would pack the purple Faith Caftan and I'd be heading to the Sea Island Resort on St. Simon's! I just love a caftan + hat combo on vacation and the shades of purple in this print are just stunning.

What's one lesson you'd share with another brand owner?
There are so many lessons that I've learned! I'd say that the most important one is that success isn't overnight and behind each "win" is a ton of effort that most people don't see. It takes time to figure out the best way to grow your brand, but I think the key is to believe in your vision so much that other people see it too.
