Q&A With Designer Christy Lynn
Tell us about yourself. Where are you from and where do you live now?
I’m an artist! I grew up studying fine arts and loving fashion as a little girl, and had the opportunity to chase my dreams. I received my BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and spent 12 years working as a designer in NYC before recently relocating to Houston, TX with my husband.
What did you do before starting CHRISTY LYNN?
I was working in the fashion industry in NYC working as a designer for several well-known designers throughout the city. I met my husband on a blind date in NYC, and he convinced me to take a leap of faith and start a new life together in Houston, TX. I wasn’t planning on starting my business when I left NYC, but realized shortly after moving that I could do what I love to do anywhere!
Tell us about your company. When did you launch? Where are you based? Why did you start it?
The company is only 2 years old! I officially started the company at the end of 2018, and it opened for business in April 2019 as a direct to consumer model. It quickly gained attention and I was encouraged to put together my first collection to sell to wholesale. We delivered our first collection to retailers in February 2020. Our home is Houston, TX and our headquarters is based here, design, sales, and the distribution (warehouse). Our manufacturing is based in Brooklyn, NY.
The first capsule was made because I was getting married, and I needed to dress all my bridesmaids and myself. So instead of just designing dresses for the day of, I took the opportunity to design a full wardrobe for a traveling bride. After the wedding, I wanted to sell the collection. So, I took the collection to NYC, and held a small trunk show in my friend’s living room and took orders. After a few months, a small production batch was made. It caught the attention of several stylists from the east coast to the south, and the brand’s following has grown since then.
What has your last year looked like? How has COVID-19 impacted your business?
Wow, unbelievable support from so many people! We had to take a quick shift from our clothing production for a few months and switch to a mask production for hospitals around our community. We were giving a mask for every mask purchased to the hospitals, and we had a lot of support from that. It allowed us to tell our story and bring brand awareness through masks, and I think people really like supporting small businesses through COVID. We reduced our collection during that period, and I think that was a smart choice. We try to keep the inventory small and on demand. We saw our wholesale business pick up drastically for the Spring 2021 collections (which has now started to deliver) I think businesses are looking more into smaller brands with a unique story that cannot be found everywhere.
What is your current mantra?
My 3 L’s in life: Live, Learn, Love. Living life is all about learning new things, and giving love from what we learn. Life shouldn’t be about competition, but collaboration with others. It allows us to expand and grow.
What are some routines you’ve been enjoying lately?
We just opened up our 1st office space for the team! The past 2 years have been spent growing this company out of my living room. I have really been enjoying opening the office every morning and putting on my Aesop candle diffuser for the room, and sitting at my desk with my coffee reading my emails before the team comes in.
What is your go-to outfit?
Our Ellie Sweater over a Gemma Dress, with boots or sneakers will work!
Any books, movies, tv shows or podcasts to recommend?
I started to watch Bridgerton recently, and I love the costumes!
Are you planning any trips this year? What places are you most looking forward to visiting when life opens back up again?
Australia! We have family there and would go at least 2x a year for the most beautiful beaches, amazing shopping, and the best coffee.
You just launched the most beautiful spring collection. Congratulations! What was your source of inspiration behind it? What is your favorite piece?
Thank you! Spring was all about looking back at the women from the French New Wave era in the 60’s and 70’s. We used a lot more warm fabrics such as cottons, voiles, and linens. I wanted to express a playfulness to the elegance of our collections, combining a day to night element for each look. A key print for Spring was hand drawn from my younger sister, Vickie, who is also a fashion designer and an artist. She is very talented, and sketched a beautiful floral that we turned into a print. One of the items in her print is the Jade Pant, which is a silk satin lounge pant with an elastic waist. I’ve worn it so much already, with a sweater, turtleneck, and even a t-shirt.
